It all started early today with weird grinding thrashing sounds coming from the dvd drive followed by all games hard locking up(no red rings of death though)called ms and its a known problem so they send you a new(refurbished)one from toronto in about 2 weeks, age of xbox 360 8 months ,looks like my pc is going to be seeing orange now.

Microsoft says 1 out of 3 360's are bad and thats why they put the new 3 year warranty on them-my take on the situation is(a)i think the failure rate is more like 2 out of 3 and as more graphical intense games come out the 360 puts out more heat and the problem is they have the gpu under the dvd rom(b)you should not be getting refurbs but brand new 360,s also they should tell you what the problem is instead of its a known problem so now am waiting for the padded box(coffin)they send from toronto by purolator and a 2 week or more wait.I hope the refurb at least has a less noisey dvd rom.

I read an article, somewhere, with an MS rep and they stated that every 360 made before July has the possibility for the 3 ring failure.

I haven't had any problems yet, and I've used my 360 a fair bit. Sometimes leaving it on for long stretches.

I did end up getting the 3 red rings of death the next day so when your 360 starts freezing up either in games or even at the desktop its just a matter of time before it dies.

Mine 360 has been working fine. It was getting heavy use from my roommate playing Viva Pinata, and more recently with Halo3 and PGR4. Woot for HDMI.
