So all the parts are ordered and I even have some already. I'll probably have it all together and running next week, after vacation starts.

Intel E6750
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme
Asus PK5-E/Wifi-AP P35
Transcend AxeRam PC6400 2x1GB
Seagate 250GB 16MB
Gigabyte 8800GT 512MB
Seasonic S12 550Watt
SoundBlaster Audigy 1
Vista Home Premium

Vista was a last minute decision. Gonna have to re-install XP anyways, so why not upgrade now I guess. May want 4GB Ram later on I guess, but I'll see how 2Gb does for now. And yes, I do plan on OC'ing this beast, but not right away.

Can't wait.. Christmas present for myself. :D

Vista's UAC made me want to strangle a small kitten, but other than that it was great. I went back to XP because of some program incompatibilities and XP is faster. I might go back to Vista after Christmas, I'm not sure yet.

I haven't really had any issues with Vista either other then it being slower (but prettier) than XP. With XP it felt like they did all their focus group research with 3 year olds (Fisher-Price UI, "My Computer", "My Network,...) and I hated having to use an Internet Explorer window to browse files on my system and Vista seemed to do away with a lot of that.

A lot of people complain about having to "allow" certain tasks and programs to run but many newer OS's have something like that now anyways. With Linux I was constantly having to go to the console and log on as the Super User to do anything on the system and that was much more time consuming and annoying than what Vista does.

Vista's UAC, which initially scared the hell out of me, hasn't effected me that I know of yet...

Anyways, sorry for the thread hyjack Lost. ;) I do like your system and how do you find the Seasonic for noise levels?

No worries for the hijak. A lot of opinions I hear about Vista have been from people that haven't even used it yet. Or they don't like "change".

I've had Vista at work for a few months now and I'm very impressed with it. It runs great on E6850 + 4 Gigs(3.25 due to 32-bit) and an 8600GT. Its almost more responsive than XP plus it looks better. Absolutely no stability problems at work. Program compatibility hasn't been too much of a problem (XP Compatibility mode enabled on a few programs). I used to hate those "allow" windows too, but my new attitude is "hey at least its asking this time around".

The Seasonic has been great actually. Its very quiet.. my last video card X1950GT was waaay louder than the PS. The 8800GT in there now is much quieter but I still don't hear the PS. I've had it about a year or more now. I wouldn't hesitate to put it in an HTPC if I needed that much juice.

The mistake I made with my current desktop in terms of noise was getting a aluminum/sidewindow/sidefan case and loading it with quiet fans. Sure the quiet fans are quieter but when you have 5 case fans alone (not including heatsinks and power supplies) it just adds up. In comparison to a system I built for my parents, that used an Antec Sonata case, the difference was night and day even stock fans inside it so I'll definitely be paying more attention to noise rather then cooling with the next desktop I make for myself.

Thx ronedogg, I'm dying to get the rest of my parts now. :)

As for the noise. I have a cheapie case with thes sides off it. Its been that way for a good while now. When I bought my HTPC case and parts I concentrated on low noise and its definitely worth it. My gaming PC is a different story.. I just turn up the headphones if the computer is making too much noise. Its not in where I sleep either, so that helps.

Anyone have a really good reason for me not to go with 64-bit Vista?

UAC is a pain in the ass if your drivers are not windows validated or verified or whatever it is.

Google it, you'll find many complaints.

Not really. I haven't had any issues. The only things that don't work for me with it are my webcam, which isn't supported by any Vista, and the VPN client for Dal. So, I don't think you'll have any trouble.
