Electronic handling fees:
DESKTOP COMPUTERS
- $10 EHF
Includes Central Processing Units (CPUs), mice, keyboards, cables and other components within the computer. This includes desktop computers, desktop computers acting as servers, and all associated keyboards and cabling.
MONITORS - $12 EHF
A display device used for displaying images from computers or other sources that does not meet the definition of a television. This includes traditional Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) and all flat panel display technologies such as LCD and plasma.
NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS
- $5 EHF
Includes portable computers such as notebook, laptop and tablet PCs.
DESKTOP PRINTERS - $8 EHF
This includes printing devices that are designed to reside on a work surface, and includes various printing technologies, including Laser & LED (electrophotographic), ink jet, dot matrix, thermal, dye sublimation and "multifunction" devices that may copy, scan, fax, or print.
TELEVISIONS - $15 - $45 EHF
A video display device with an imbedded television tuner. This includes various display technologies, such as traditional Cathode Ray Tube (CRT), flat panel (LCD and plasma) or rear projection.
18" or less - $15
19" to 29" - $25
30" to 45" - $30
46" and up - $45
Combinations of these products would have a combined EHF. For example: Desktop computer with bundled monitor: $10+$12=$22
Desktop computer with bundled monitor & printer: $10+$12+$8=$30
Desktop computer with integrated monitor (non-portable): $12+$10=$22
Desktop computer with integrated TV: $10+applicable TV EHF by size

So if I buy a $10 mouse, I end up paying DOUBLE, WTF! And cables, they're probably the easiest to recycle and are chock full of valuable copper. They should have used a % of the item cost.

Yeah, I'm not sure how this is supposed to work. If it is indeed their intent to charge on each individual piece, I know I won't be buying any more gear until I move to NB in the summer.

Are these costs added to the price up front or are they considered a tax that are slapped on after the fact?

If it's up front then it's entirely possibly that many (mostly the big chain stores though) will eat the additional costs on larger items since they like $_9 and $_99 prices for customers. If it's applied afterwards as a tax then we'll be paying the whole thing. :(

Oh well, if it does in fact help the environment than I can't really be against it.

If it's applied to each indiviual computer part it will be the death knell of places like Mysterybyte.

Indeed, I'm not paying an extra $120+ to build up my own system.

i can't help but wonder if this affects only items sold in NS or all items to be shipped to NS from out of province too. Some of these fees are more than enough to cover shipping stuff in from out of province.

the idea is good, but will fail without wide scale acceptance. something like this on the provincial level will do little to help the environment and much to harm business. i'm normally all for helping the environment in every way possible, but at the same time some economic feasibility must be kept in mind otherwise consumer interests will shift to places that don't care about the environment at all.

The fees will be applied to all products shipped to NS from at least Canadian Distributers. There are already a few provinces which have a similar system in place and companies like TD or "can't be named :)" apply the fees automatically at cash-out.

My main concern is how they intend to apply it... If I purchase indiviual components to build my own computer, why should I be paying the fee on each component when somebody who purchases a "big-box" pre-built will only be paying a single fee......

Well, I ordered a new VC from MB, and there was no visible $10 charge for EHF.

I get the impression that when it refers to 'desktop computers' they mean a complete computer, everything after the "includes..." just defines what they consider to be a complete computer.

If my guess is right, that would mean that individual components should be exempt (except for monitor and printers).
