well i finally ordered the parts for my HTPC
heres the specs

AMD x2 4200+
ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus
2GB Patriot DDR2-800
Nvidia 7200GS 256MB
Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-S-Plus (allows for open air satellite as well as some descrambling features i won't mention ;)
500GB WD SATA HDD
LG dvd burner
Antec Minuet HTPC case

i think it should scratch the itch, nothing too high-end.

I can't decide if I want an HTPC at some point or one of those media cener extender boxes that companies like D-Link are putting out. I suppose it would depend if I plan on gaming on the TV or at a desk with a monitor.

You can never have enough HDD's.

I actually don't fill up hard drive space that quickly. I burn off a lot of my media and format often enough that older games and files I don't really need to save get cleared off.

I have friends on the other hand that squirrel away everything that comes in contact with their drives. I wouldn't be surprised if they backed up virus' and adaware they got "just in case". ;)

I can't wait to build a new gaming system so I can use some of the old parts to build an HTPC! God I hate being poor!

building a good HTPC is pretty cheap really, considering what prebuilt one cost.
