I'd take the HD3870, oh wait I already did. I may even buy another, if I can get a decent CF board at a decent price.

If you're not going to make the purchase for a month or so, there are rumours out that there is a new revision of the GPU for the 3870 which will have higher clock speeds.

Never worth while playing the waiting game though unless that was already the plan. (Should be more out in April).

I'd still say the 3870 though.

if your gonna buy 2 just get the 3870x2 and be done with it, a lot cheaper then buying 2 plus a supporting board and the performance difference is almost nil.

48xx's should be out in Juneish, that's what I'm waiting for (not that I have a choice in the matter anyways). It also depends on if you are planning to go a little higher later on, and if you have an NVidia chipset (to do SLi as compared to XFire).

Of course I'd go ATi anyways! NV can suckit!

I went for the 9600GT OC... but then again it was down to $159 so price difference played a role in my choice.

the 9600gt is alot faster, and now they seem to be on sale everywhere for as low as $145 a piece so hands down the 9600gt.

Where did you see benchmarks that suggest this?

It's slightly faster than a 3850, not a 3870.

This is more or less the 9600GT that I'm using and althought it's not faster (and definitely not a lot faster) than a 3870 it is very close to it. It loses out in a few benchmarks but then wins in several others and they are all within a few FPS really.

console is running one right now doing 22k in 05 and 13k in 06 with very little o/c work, i guess if your gonna run at bare stock its not faster but whats the fun in that. thats what i mean. thats similar to my 8800gt which is alot faster then a 3870.

alot faster is prob a little overboard, but like i said console's numbers are pretty impressive, i am yet to see many people i know with a 3870 post those numbers.

Hmmm......

I stand corrected (going to have to do some more research.... :) ).

I'm currently running a PCI 3dRage II+ in my testbed rig and will need a new card shortly.... will certainly have a close look at the 9600GT :)
