I originally bought a 74GB raptor in 2004 and a couple years later i bought another one to raid 0. Fastest hard drive with a reasonable price ever but i'm never doing a raid getup for my OS any more. I've been sailing for 6 months now and it crapped out on my roommate a while ago, for some strange reason.

I'm buying (at least) 3TB of storage for all my linux distros that I download off teh internets. That's what 750GB drives are for. I'd much rather get a drive (from a family) with proven track record, even though some of you may say that WD has a shite record it's the same with every manufacturer.

I'd like to support a company that actually produces products that basically improves alost every aspect of my computing experience by speeding up the main bottleneck (hard drive) in the computer.

Kudos to WD and their pushing of the envelope.

Take the heat sink off and jury rig it into a laptop for some super fast fun! Just make sure you don't put it onto your lap or you'll get some super burns. Of course you'd need a laptop with a 12V rail to feed the drive. I'm pretty sure not many people buy the 4000$ desktop replacements but those people would be the ones that actually do that upgrade.

Western Digital is actually my personal favorite manufacturer. I've used Maxtors (I know), Seagates and even Fujitsu's without problems as well but by far most of my drives have been WD and have never had a problem.

i second that, in this computer alone...there was a maxtor...than a seagate...both crashed and finally HP sent us a WD and has never had an issue...knock on wood
