Do you guys disable this? On startup it loads a shit load of files from games that I play .. eg Crysis, UT3 etc. My hard drive thrashes for 5-10 mins after startup. And Everytime I get done playing a game it does the same thing.

Vista trashes the HD for about half an hour after I boot, it's the damn indexing thing, even though it's not setup to index anything, it still effin does it unless I disable the service.

Not the indexer on mine that was the first thing I disabled. I see in resource monitor it's svchost.exe that is accessing game files even hours after having played the game. :(

It was on a fresh install from an a legit Vista DVD. Only thing installed was my steam games (that was always on my XP install and Crysis so I highly doubt it was any kind of spyware or virus ... etc .. I looked into it and scanned but found nothing.

svchost is the alias for many different running services. one of which is windows defender.
maybe this won't help what you're talking about, but i noticed a definite improvement in system performance and boot time by disabling windows defender in both services.msc and msconfig.

Does anyone know if Windows 7 makes changes to this constant hard drive useage on bootup that I have also noticed on my laptop? It would be nice to know it was one of the things being stream-lined with the new version.

Also, I have 5 instances of svchost running on my work system right now. :?

Even tho my hard drive goes a lot I still find Vista faster in everyday usage than XP. I swore off I'd never use Vista and that i didn't like it but the more I use it the more I like it .. err well aside from the drop in gaming performance.

10 svchosts here..

After using Vista for 2 weeks I went back to XP for a couple days and all I got to say is OMG. The difference in speed of programs opening is unreal. Vista is wayyy faster for almost everything but USB transfers and a few games. If there wasn't so many issues with some of my shit not working in Vista I'd still be running it. I have a dual boot system so I'm going to leave it there and see if drivers get updated for my issues.
