I have an idea.

I want to make a wall mounted white board that, instead of whiteboard material and marker, uses some sort of polycarbonate and grease pencil. As well, is illuminated from the bottom by a light source, thus illuminating the grease pencil.

My question is does anyone know if grease pencil is easily washed off of polycarbonate sheet, or if there is a better material (i've heard Lexan, don't know what it's all about).

Where do you go to buy fiberglass/Pcarbonate/Lexan sheets? I know a lot of people use them for window mods.

Thanks

Be careful with Lexan and most variants of plexiglass; if you leave the grease markings on it long enough, it will begin to eat into the material, and that's definitely not something you want, especially with an illuminated board.

Have a look over at Instructables for ideas and designs, they might give you some intuition on how you want to build your own:

Your idea about illuminating the board is neat. Personally, I think it would be cool to do the same thing using highlighter as the marker, and UV light as the source of illumination. The UV light would make the highlighter glow.

For sources of plexiglass and Lexan and such, I typically find mine at Home Depot every now and then, and sometimes even Princess Auto. They used to sell huge 2m x 2m sheets of thick plexiglass as "Rear-projection TV screen protectors", but I don't think they have them anymore.

I saw some of the things over at Instructables, namely the "clear glass board".

The UV light would be awesome but I would like to find a way to concentrate it to mostly JUST the glass. Not that it's a big deal, but blacklight seeping out the sides or up the wall would be a pain.

I can't remember what the company is called, but there is a place on Thornhill Dr in Burnside that sold me a bunch a few years ago.

http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=thornhill+drive&sll=44.695322,-63.5917&sspn=0.01327,0.027637&gl=ca&ie=UTF8&ll=44.699013,-63.587537&spn=0.01327,0.027637&z=15&iwloc=addr

I think they were affiliated with GE, but I could be wrong.

As far as using the black light, I'm not certain that would work. You'd need the light to reflect off the highlighter, but instead it would be traveling inside the board. Using the marker and a contrasting set of led lights would probably be easier to see.
